My name is Megan and I am the co-founder of Same Diff Bags. My inspiration behind Same Diff was to find a way to combine my passion for art with my passion for helping others. I have wanted to design, make, and sell bags since I was 8 years old. I’m not sure why because, prior to this year, I didn’t even know how to sew. However, when COVID hit this spring and my extracurriculars were suspended, I finally had time to pursue this project. I got out my mom’s sewing machine and spent hours on YouTube learning how to sew zippered bags. I fell more in love with the bags with each one I created. I chose the name Same Diff because I wanted to highlight that there are so many ways that we are all fundamentally the same but that we also all have our own distinctive traits. I believe it is our differences that make us, and the world, beautiful. As a result, I decided to make my bags in a variety of pattern combinations and sizes and to have my company tagline be “celebrating beautiful differences.”
I have spent years volunteering with organizations that run programs for adults with special needs and for kids living in underserved communities. Ever since my mom took me to a Special Olympics event during my freshman year, I have been committed to helping others. Since then, I have taken a service trip to Costa Rica to help rehabilitate a farm that will provide access to sustainable income to youth with mental differences and I have volunteered JAM Studios, teaching classes to adults with autism. I am also currently on the youth board of Abilis, an organization that provides assistance to adults and children with developmental differences and their families.
I don’t believe there is enough stress on the power of a good deed on a small scale: a smile, a high five, a hug, a mindset. That is why I believe keeping in mind it is our differences that make us beautiful is taking us a big step forward in creating a happy society.
